Bermondsey Street Festival 2007

Many hundreds of people mingled in the warmth of Tanner Street Park last September to enjoy the first-ever Bermondsey Street Festival – with organisers calling it a “fantastic day”.

Gallery1 Andrew Logan, the famous sculptor and performance artist, cut the ribbon to open the festival and an estimated 1,000 people – including the designer and Festival patron Zandra Rhodes – turned up to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere provided by the live music, competitions, tennis tournaments, food, art and craft stalls. The most popular event was the dog show, with over twenty entrants in the pedigree class. The winner was announced by the Mayor of Southwark, Cllr Bob Skelly who presented a ‘Holly&Lil’ collar as a prize.

Michael Davis, vice chair of the Bermondsey Street Area Partnership (BSAP), said: “It was a fantastic day and we were blessed with the weather. The dog show was a great success. It was the most beautiful day, it all fell into place. It’s a learning curve so that we can be a bigger, better Festival next year.

“We wanted to get the community involved and bring people together. We’re already looking forward to next year’s Festival”.

“As a proud member of the Bermondsey community, it’s fabulous to get together and meet people not just walk past them on the street. In getting to know each other on a human level suddenly one becomes aware of the very special flower shop and the boys who run it, or take part in a dog show and discover how many people walk dogs here. Having a community is very special and something we must treasure.”
Zandra Rhodes, Festival patron

“By drawing together the local community and visitors alike in a range of fun activities the BSAP rightly deserves congratulations for its first Festival. I hope it becomes a key event in the area’s calendar, and encourage everyone to get involved next year.”
Simon Hughes, MP

“I thoroughly enjoyed being part of the Festival, which I hope will become a regular fixture for the community. The event is a good example of how this very creative and dynamic community has established itself in this part of Southwark. It is certainly an area ‘on the up’.”
Cllr Bob Skelly, Mayor of Southwark

“I was very impressed by the first Bermondsey Street Festival back in September. It was a festival of creativity, fun and enjoyable food and drink. I was staggered by the number of local people who attended and thoroughly enjoyed mingling with the diverse mix of local people. This festival was hugely popular and a fantastic example of how the Bermondsey Street Area Partnership works on behalf of residents. Keep up the good work. And I am looking forward to next year’s festival.”
Cllr Denise M Capstick TD RN MBA

“The quirky character and incredible sense of community was one of the things that first attracted me to live on Bermondsey Street. The annual Festival was just the icing on the cake. The whole community of residents and small businesses came together to celebrate, what was such a unique and enjoyable treat.”
Katrina de Massey, local resident
